Because we live in the world with others, compassion is needed. As soon as you bring in compassion, any tension will subside, with others as well as with yourself. Compassion implies non-violence, harmlessness, forgiveness, patience, charity and letting go. Compassion makes you conscious, receptive, settled and relaxed. Together compassion and wisdom lead to Enlightenment.
Compassion bridges the gap of separation and soothes others too, because they are not "others" ultimately, they are you; they are a part of your Consciousness. Compassion leads therefore to being One, being the Divine, your Self, your Spirit, the same Consciousness throughout. Therefore the Upanishadic saying, "Whatever you perceive is within you."
Apply it to your daily life: take time to be compassionate. Mind releases at that very moment. That makes peace within yourself and with others. Then one-pointedness is natural. When your focus is applied to your Goal, your consciousness begins to awaken, to enlighten.
Compassion saves the world. It makes you a Buddha, Awakened.
